Sectarian killings of Alawite minorities at the hands of new Syrian government-affiliated forces continue a month after the massacre of 1,700 Alawites in the coastal regions. Since March 30th, 42 people have fallen victim to sectarian killings, and such incidents have spread from Latakia to Tortous and to Homs, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR). Although former Al-Qaeda commander-turned-president Ahmad Al-Sharaa stated that internal investigations will be conducted to hold guilty parties accountable, head of SOHR Rami Abdurrahman stated that “The killings did not stop, but now they are individual acts.”

Al-Sharaa justified the killings back in March by alleging that the security forces were performing a counterinsurgency crackdown on remnants of the Assad regime, although anonymous reports claimed that all Assad loyalists fled the country at the start of the insurgency. Residents have also claimed that forces have even executed minorities who opposed the Assad administration.
