The leader of the Druze community in Syria’s southern Suwayda province, Hikmat al-Hijri, stated that ongoing talks with the “Syrian government” are complicated and signal the difficulty of reaching an agreement.
In an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), al-Hijri added that the armed factions (terrorists) now consider themselves responsible for governance in Damascus, which he said is unacceptable both on a Syrian and international level.
He affirmed that there is no consensus with the so called “Syrian government” and expressed his rejection of any foreign intervention at this stage, which he described as both transitional and dangerous.
The radio station also reported that factions in Suwayda are mobilizing fighters and preparing plans to repel “government forces” if necessary, noting that al-Hijri emphasized the Druze militias that have maintained security in the province will remain unchanged and will continue to control their borders with “government”-held territory.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the “Men of Dignity Movement,” Bassam Abu Fakhr, confirmed that the movement is not loyal to the Syrian “government” but is committed to the unity of Syria and its capital, Damascus. He stated that after what happened on the Syrian Coast, it is impossible not to doubt the possibility of coexistence.
For his part, the newly appointed commander of the Military Council in Suwayda, Tareq al-Shoufi, called on the United States and Israel to defend the entire Druze region against what he described as extremist attacks.
